Community and Transformation
When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer, I joined a few events but I didn’t feel connected. As I was conducting interviews for my book, people kept telling me about their support groups and breast cancer related community, but I still didn’t feel that a support group was right for me.
Since publication of my book a year ago, I have found a group that really fits for me. It is not a traditional support group. Instead, it is a group working to make a difference through access and education. I have found community, but I am also experiencing the transformative power of action within a community.
We all have to find our own fit, our own purpose, our own way of turning adversity into purpose, our own transformation. In the process we find our own loving and supportive community.
It turns out that the sisterhood that nobody wants to join, the sisterhood of breast cancer survivors, is just such a community.
